So my last post also featured this darling family, but I just couldn’t wait to share these! If you follow me on social media (Facebook, Instagram) you probably saw a post back in January of a new addition to the AMP family: a Contax 645 Film camera. I shot film all throughout college, developing it myself, spending up to 8 hours a day in the darkroom (feeling like a vampire when I finally came out in the light) and even doing large format film and color darkroom. There is something so amazingly organic about film to me because it is pure chemistry. There’s no computer interpreting the light, only a piece of plastic, some gelatin and light-sensitive crystals. How amazing is it that from those three little things we get such incredible images? Digital photography was really gaining speed when I first started my business, I never shot anything for work on film. But with the resurgence of everything vintage these past several years, film, thought to be a dying art, has made a comeback. And it even made itself known with the hashtag #filmisnotdead.

At the beginning of 2015 I was in a major state of reflection with my business. 2014 was an incredible year for me, but with it came the price of my time with my friends and family, but also (I felt) my creativity. I wanted something to really inspire me again. Being a creative person (and someone who has to be creative for their job) it can be really hard sometimes to get those creative juices flowing. Just as everyone has off days where they don’t want to do something, creatives feel the same way. Only, we can’t really afford to feel that way for our clients.

After my reflection post about what I really wanted for my business this year, I realized I wanted to find a way to be creative again, in a new way, but in a way that would still give my clients what they’ve come to expect. Enter film. Film forces you to slow down, really think about your composition, and really KNOW your camera. There are only 16 exposures per roll so you don’t want to waste them! After shooting my very first roll with a couple back in January I was totally hooked. It was exactly what I was looking for. It gave me peace, made me slow down a bit and really enjoy the process more. That session was one of the best I’ve had in a long time (I will definitely share those images as well!).

Right now I’m shooting a roll or two at most sessions I have, just to test things out. But eventually, I hope to add this in to every one of my collections. It will just take some time and practice.

So with all of this having been said, I will be starting a new series on the blog titled Film Friday, where I share some images from a recent shoot where I also shot film. And at the bottom of the post I’ll put up a comparison image between digital and film. This won’t necessarily be every Friday, but I hope to make it a regular feature.

Thank you for being a part of this new journey with me, as always, I appreciate everyone so very much for your support of my business. I would not be where I am today without all of you!

And just for comparison sake, here is the same pose in digital and in film. I thought I loved the digital one but now seeing the film for me there is no contest which one is better (hint: I think its film)

Thank you for a wonderful 2014!

With the year coming to an end, I thought it would be best to wrap up 2014 with a few updates! 2014 has been one of the most amazing years for Ashley McCormick Photography; I hit an incredible milestone of 200 weddings this past March, and I will be finished off the year with 30 weddings and 80 portrait sessions completed! Whew! Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, so much for supporting me and being a part of my business this year. I hope that I get to see many of your faces in 2015 as well! :)

Taking Some Time for Me

AMZ001

So with the changes in pricing also comes a little break for me. As immensely grateful as I am to all of my 2014 clients, 110 wedding/portraits were a little more than I could handle at times! Mostly, I missed out on a lot of special events with my family and friends throughout the year. I decided that life is too short to work all the time, I want to spend more time with that guy in the photo on the right! :) So starting in 2015 I will only be taking 20 weddings instead of my usual 30. I’m already booked with 15 so I’ll only be accepting 5 more. For portraits, I’ll be taking sessions on weekdays only unless already scheduled. I hope that everyone understands the need to slow down and enjoy life a bit more, and I hope that I can still work with all of my amazing portrait clients Monday-Friday!

Can I just say how in love I am with Kristin’s red skirt, pearls and leopard heels? She’s a classic girl after my own classic loving heart. And Paul looked so dapper in his suit. I love it when my couples get a little fancy at their sessions! We were lucky that we had absolutely gorgeous weather for their session, but Kristin’s little touches made it feel so cozy and wintery. I love that! Especially here in Florida, we don’t get much of a winter. I had such a blast with these two at the always gorgeous Rollins College, I cannot wait until their wedding in March!

Wow. I cannot BELIEVE that today marks the 9th year for me shooting weddings and portraits. NINE YEARS PEOPLE!! I don’t know that I’ve done anything in my life for 9 years… not even marriage! (We’re on 8.5) And what an incredible 9 years its been. With over 200 weddings shot and I can’t even think of how many portrait sessions (300 maybe??), the last 9 years have been more amazing than I could have even imagined. I am so incredibly grateful for my career, something I truly never even thought I’d do. Not that I would trade it for anything (I seriously wouldn’t) but I never even considered photography as a career. I was always an art kid (theater, dance, piano and art classes were my jam growing up. No sports for this girl) so I knew art would be the focus of my career, but I was never sure in what form. I originally planned to do graphic design (which I still have a love for!) but after taking a photography class my second semester at FSU (the only art class I could get a seat in!) my teacher encouraged me to pursue photography more and suggested transferring to Daytona’s photography program through UCF. So I did, not knowing what I was going to do with it.  But in my first photography semester, a girl I worked with at a local coffee shop was getting married and asked if I’d like to shoot at her wedding. And that’s when I fell in love with it. I slowly started getting more and more shooting jobs, mostly through friends (thank you to all of you who trusted me in those early years!) and 9 years later, here I am.

I wish that I could give away a million sessions to express how immensely grateful I am to each and every one of my clients, fans, family and friends. You have all been so supportive of me, so encouraging and so trusting. It is no small thing to trust someone to document the most important moments of your lives, and the fact that you all have trusted me means more than you’ll ever know. Truly.
